About us

Just before we join Wendy and Gary in “The Card Collection” shop let us take a few steps back into yesteryear. “The greePicture of Wendy and Garythe area of land that includes the Carrington Centre in which “The Card Collection” shop is situated – has for centuries been a major focus of activity for the people of Eccleston. From here reverberated the sounds of the Parliamentarian Army, who had an encampment on this site in 1643 during the English Civil War. In this same century woollen processing was established. Industry continued into the 18th century in the form of a corn mill and a calico printing works until, in 1845 a cotton mill was added, involving both spinning and weaving. Over the ensuing years industrial activities increased and building extended, providing jobs which brought long term prosperity to the community.

Eventually, in 1895 the owning firm of the industrial complex became Carrington and Dewhurst. After the merger with Viyella in 1970 the mills had the distinction of being the largest rayon weaving mills in the world. Change is inevitable however, and in the 1980’s textile production ceased. Older parts of the mill were demolished, whilst others became smaller industrial units, and Eccleston’s industrial era came to an end.

Eventually Wendy came to work in one of the units in the centre and cast many an admiring glance at the corner card shop on the market walk, lingering over the interesting items for sale when she had occasion to step inside. The years passed, during which time both Wendy and Gary continued to work for others. However, they were becoming increasingly aware of a need for a change of direction in their and their family’s lives, for they now had a young daughter and son. They explored the possibilities of running a business of their own and the planning of one even reached an advanced stage. It was not to be however, for circumstances arising dashed their hopes and they were left wondering why.

The answer to this was soon to come however, for the card shop in The Carrington Centre was put up for sale and, as the saying goes, the rest is history. Wendy and Gary have now been the proud owners of the “The Card Collection” for over a year.

The bright and attractively presented displays of cards, gifts, and collectibles etc. bear testimony to Wendy’s creative flair. A gift wrapping service is available and Wendy is pleased to make up a limited number of balloon room/table decorations for local customers. Both Wendy and Gary are enthusiastic about their work and are keen for their service to give satisfaction. They are always pleased to pass advice and ideas on to customers to help with their party and family occasion needs. In this they are well supported by Margaret and Khadine who work in the shop part- time.

Whether buying or browsing, you are assured a warm welcome at “The Card Collection” Shop – a family business where quality and personal service count
